My daughter's first rifle

This was actually MY first rifle when I was about 8 or 9 years old. She is 8 years old. It was time to pass it down to her. We have been going over all gun safety, handling, etc for a long time now.

It is a Marlin .22 single-shot bolt action. Love this little guy. It is a little over 22 years old. I hope she keeps it and passes it down to one of her own children. (FAR into the future :) )

She was helping me clean it and then posed with it. I will take her out shooting it when the weather gets warmer.

And fair warning.... DO NOT turn this into a gun debate thread. I will delete your comment.

Good job bro. Marlins are great guns to start with and .22 ammo is cheap. Once in a while I take out my sig 522 out instead of the AR for a cheap day at the range. Pain in the ass to clean tho since .22 is a dirty round. But fun nonetheless! Props to your daughter.

Kids with guns??? We aussies must be missing something....

I guess its a good way to teach them to be responsible with them. But do they need them?

I guess I dont see the need as growing up in Sydney, no one had a gun. There was no need for them. Nowhere to hunt unless you wanted to drive for hours..

Plus we have really, really strict gun laws.

We hunt, we shoot for sport, and we have guns for self defense. Yes, we and my child need them.

And you are missing something...

It's called the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution. ;)

Again. Please do not turn this into a gun debate. K, thanks.

I am in no way trying to turn this into a gun debate... just pointing out a difference in societies.

However, Moderator or not, this is a forum. I dont understand how you can put something out there if you dont want it to be discussed.

No worries ;) Politics are not technically allowed here and gun control, etc falls under that. If people keep it civil I dont have much of an issue, but it never stays that way. I had to shut the last gun thread down. I was spear heading it as to warn everyone not to turn MY thread into another one. I understand you just pointing out differences. No issue with that. It just always spurs into more.

Tell me about it. To own an air rifle in WA, you need to live on a property that has a minimum of 5 arces of land. Mate wanted one for shooting rabbits on his 3 arce property and wasn't allowed one.

To own a .308 you need to own a ridiculous amount of land.

Good for you, and her. I taught my kids the same way, we all hunt, trap, fish, etc. I really like her demonstration on safety with her finger out of the gaurd, well done dad.

So, 8 or 9 appears to be the acceptable age for kids to get their first gun yes?
I'm assuming they start to learn about them much earlier though...
So at 9 they get a gun, at what age do you let them hunt and kill their first animal? Do you teach them how to prepare the kill and knife skills?

At what age do kids get introduced to hand guns and automatic weapons?
At what age do you allow them to start buying their own firearms?

If you're not armed for hunting reasons but self defence and recreational shooting (at the range I guess?), when do you get your kids firing guns and having them keep their own?

Honestly I'm not looking for a rant about your 5th amendment or whatever story you have about the right to be armed. Just curious as to how the gun culture introduces their kids to such things.

All depends on your child and when you feel they are mature enough to understand. I have verbally taught my daughter about gun safety for the last couple years.

Legal hunting age here is 12 I believe. There are youth hunter programs that will allow them to hunt younger though.

Yes, she will field dress her own animal when she hunts and kills one. If she is not ready or will not do that (at least get her hands dirty and help me), she will not hunt. She has been taught to respect the animal. Never kill any animal that we will not eat. That goes for fishing as well.

She will not "keep" her own firearm until she is 18 and can legally store them herself. Any of "her" firearms will be stored in my safe. She will under no circumstances touch any firearm unless she is with me at the range or cleaning them at the house. She cannot legally buy her own firearm until she is 18. She must be 21 to purchase her own handgun.

She will start shooting my handgun when I feel she is proficient with the rifle. Most likely in another year or two. Automatic weapons are not legal here. Semi-Auto are. That would be my handgun. I do not own any semi-auto rifles at this time. But that is not really anything different. Just one shot per trigger pull.

I apologize if I came off rude earlier. I am all for a clean and civil discussion about differences between cultures. I just did not want it to turn into a fight about why people believe we should not have guns, they kill people, think of the children, etc. If we can keep it friendly, I will be glad to talk about it.

Thanks J, do you prepare them for taking their first life or is it just something they don't think twice about?(animals, not human I'm talking about)

Absolutely. I explain to her where our meat comes from. Chicken, cow, pig, etc. She understands they must die to provide our food. While we are out and she sees deer, I show her that is what I hunt. Kids of course do not want to hurt cute animals ;). But when they understand that is our food, they understand and respect the animal for what it provides us. She claims she would be able to shoot it (always exclaiming to me, only if it is for food).

Now when it comes down to it, that is another story. She will come on hunting trips with me before carrying her own rifle. She will watch what happens when I shoot a deer and then gutting and dressing it in the field. If she chooses that is something she does not want to do, I will respect her decision and not push hunting on her.

She goes fishing with me and sees how we process the fish, so she is not grossed out by it.

If she only wants to shoot at the range, then I would be fine with that. I do not want her to be afraid of firearms. She will know never touch one if found, always go to an adult if someone tries to show her a gun, etc. She will respect and understand them.

I may own a bunch of guns but I myself have never been brought up to hunt. I feel uncomfortable about shooting an animal even if it is for food. I have friends that do hunt and I like cooking what they bring to me. I guess I'm a city boy but I do respect the fact that people hunt. There are places here in california where people invite you to hunt squirrels on their property. But even that I decline.

I started shooting with my daughter at 7. She gets a damn good smack for not following muzzle awareness. She can shoot a 2 inch group at 75 meters consistently. She respects guns and life. She has said that she will never shoot an animal but that choice I respect. But she enjoys shooting. This is awesome to see stuff like this. just started my son shooting but boys seem a little more immature at 7 so I really have to watch him.
