Ok I know what you want, I test rode a FZ8, its awesome, no question about it, but the FZ1 is crazy.
When I got off the 8, and took the fz1 for a spin, I knew which one I wanted.

The fz8 is A LOT more comfortable. its smooth, great quality.
If I'd have to grade it, I'd give it an 8. The FZ6 is a 7,5 (talking about a stock bike).
The FZ1 comfortwise is a 6,5-7. It felt a lot less comfortable, kinda when you sat on a nice big sofa, and switch to a wooden chair.

But the power  omfg the fz1 is just crazy.
I rode a bmw S1000RR, which has a lot more bhp, but the torque is almost the same. On the fz1 I felt like a insane idiot going WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.
bmw not so much.

So if you decide to upgrade, try the fz1 first :D

I am biased of course, but I came from the FZ6, my wife owns the FZ6R and I moved to the FZ1. The FZ1 is in a class of its own. It is the single best all-around bike I've ever ridden. This one is staying until she spinds her wheels for the last time. If I could afford it, I'd buy 2 more in the crates and just let them sit, taking them out only after the previous one stops running. But, given the lack of problems with the Gen II FZ1, well, the two in crates could become items in my last will and testament. :D

That being said, I'd still like to try the FZ8. One thing you could do it find a wrecked FZ1 and swap motors. The FZ8, after all, is the same frame and engine block. :D

So curious to ride a FZ1 now, but cost of insurance just makes it out of the question..

The 07 R6S I had was fun, but since I commute with it 95% of the time (approx. 350 miles/week), I became tired of the ride position and not having just enough power when I wanted it most. So, after figuring out that the FZ1 was out of my budget, I'm hoping the FZ8 will fit right in. :) I'm also hoping the cost of insurance is significantly less... :(

Where you live, how is insurance rated for bikes? Here? We are rated on engine size only. I'm glad they didn't choose to throw HP into the equation because I'd still be on the FZ6!

Lol!

According to my mother, who works for AIS (Auto Insurance Specialists), motorcycles are first based on Category (Cruiser, Standard, Sport, etc.), then based on engine size, THEN based on location (Some cities have severe criminal activity.) and motorcycle history (Some motorcycles are stolen more than others).

The insurance quote I received for a FZ1 for full coverages was $2800 for the year. Then, for the FZ6, it was merely $700 for the year... Crossing my fingers that it won't cost more than $1000 for full coverage with the options I want...

Maybe we should start an insurance thread. lol... This is completely off topic. :p

My apologies for thread jacking. Carry on. ;)

hey that would be an awesome idea to swap the motor out would be a fun build project to ... i will keep my eye out for a wrecked fz1 i see from fz1 post earlier that genII fz1 would be the motor to go with

After having changed bikes 5 times in 5 years, I realized no matter how powerful the bike, after a while you get used to it and need more power to get the same rush, it's a drug. I went from a Kawa Versys 650cc to a Speed Triple 1050cc (after a month I was already looking for a sprocket change to improve acceleration (and it's not by any means a slow bike)!! Before I had the chance to change the sprocket, I got a pretty bad ticket (in 1st gear!), although I loved the bike, I convinced myself to sell it if I wanted to keep my license.

I then bought a Triumph Scrambler (57HP, 170km/h top speed) and.....I loved the Scrambler! I would scrape the pegs, and had a blast in the twisties while having no trouble keeping up with much more powerful bikes. Wasnt too great for 2up riding though, so ended up selling it and here I am now ready to pick up my Fz8 which I think should be a fun, decently powered and practical bike.

A monkey could gun the throttle on a 200HP bike in a straight line, doesnt mean he'll be a pro when he hits the twisties. And that's where I like to improve my skills, while improving my chances of keeping my license.

I read somewhere these engines were the same as the R1, except the cylinders r sleeved down and the cam is a lighter one. Couldnt you just pull the engine, press the sleeve out, new pistons and rings, cam, power comander V and have it tuned. Will that not make it essentially a 1000? I know that is what my idea was for this winter.

i was under the impression the transmission was geared differently (more like the fz1, or the actual fz1 tran) so adding the extra 200cc's isn't going to net you much.

my thought is if you wanted a liter bike get the fz1 instead of going through what would be a LOT of cash unless you own a machine shop and a buttload of tools.

what are you after? more acceleration (torque) or more speed (hp)? high end is more than enough imo and if you want acceleration just do a -1 +2 sprocket change. hell of a lot cheaper.

I own a shop, so was thinking in the down time this winter I wanted to go through the engine just to tinker, and whiile I was in there go bigger. I love the bike just the way she is. But I have a problem with leaving anything just the way it is!!!! Will add the power commander by mid summer and then I will prob have all the bolt ons I can find. This winter I know I am going to get bored with looking at it just the way it is and will end up ripping out the engine and hopefully building a cusotm dual exhaust.
